Closing time – swimming pool rules for end of the season

Posted on Oct 10, 2012 by Cindy

As the weather cools and the days get shorter, swimming pool owners across Toronto are starting to think about closing their pools for the season. While Toronto residents might be staying out of the water for a while, fish and other aquatic life remain active and can be harmed by pool water that is not disposed of properly.

Guidelines:
● When releasing water onto your own property, ensure that water does not flow onto your neighbours’ properties or into a ravine.
● Chlorine/bromine pools can be emptied into the storm sewer when the chlorine/bromine concentration has been reduced to zero. To reduce the concentration to zero, either do not add chemicals for a week or use dechlorinating tablets.
● Water from saltwater pools can be emptied onto your own property, into a sanitary sewer, or removed by a certified waste hauler. Saltwater from pools must not be released into the storm sewer.

More information about how to close your pool can be viewed on the City’s website.
